Acupuncture

Shelby Center Hospital for Animals is a full-service veterinary hospital offering both Western medicine and acupuncture to pets in Memphis, Tennessee, and the surrounding areas. Our experienced veterinarians often combine Western or modern medicine with holistic or natural approaches such as acupuncture.

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of needles into specific parts of an animal’s body to promote healing or pain relief. The needles are inserted in specific areas that are understood to regulate the flow of energy or “Chi.” Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with Western medicine and can be extremely effective veterinary medicine in alleviating pain and ailments such as arthritis, nerve pain, gastrointestinal disorders, and respiratory issues. Acupuncture has been used in human medicine for centuries and is presumed to have originated in ancient China to promote healing for issues ranging from certain diseases to pain management.

How does acupuncture work?
Many benefits of veterinary acupuncture are not completely understood in spite of the fact that it has been used in animals for centuries. Modern studies of veterinary acupuncture indicate that needles can promote nerve stimulation, alleviate muscle spasms, and release natural chemicals such as endorphins and cortisol that can lead to pain relief or healing. Acupuncture is an all-natural and drug-free approach to veterinary medicine that has no known side effects on treated animals.
