In-Clinic Diagnostics

Blood work values are one of the most important factors in determining the cause of sickness in pets, as well as indicating their overall health. For this reason, Shelby Center Hospital for Animals has one of the most advanced diagnostic laboratories available, and we are proud to provide superior veterinary blood work testing in the Memphis area.

What blood testing can be performed at Shelby Center Hospital for Animals?
Blood chemistries, complete blood counts (CBC), electrolytes, thyroid testing, fecal analysis, and urinalysis are all tests that can be conducted in our diagnostic laboratory. The results of these tests can often tell our doctors if your furry family member may have an issue that cannot be seen from the outside.

Blood chemistries indicate how well your pet’s liver, kidneys and pancreas function. A CBC can indicate your pet’s overall health, as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are all determined. Large numbers of red cells can indicate dehydration, while few red cells may mean anemia in an animal. White cell counts that are high may be indicative of leukemia, while few white cells may indicate inflammation or issues with the ability to produce new white cells by the bone marrow. Electrolytes indicate whether an animal is dehydrated. Finally, thyroid testing can indicate a number of diseases including Cushing’s and Addison’s disease. Fecal testing can indicate intestinal parasites that cannot be seen by a physical exam and can often be spread to humans. Urinalysis can let our doctors know if your pet has certain infections or even diabetes.
